Mid-Week Motivation – “What to do about haters?”

Hey, Team Dragon Fit!

Hope that you had a great Labor Day Weekend and that you are continuing to push play and crush your nutrition!

This week’s topic is about “Haters” and what to do about them.

“Haters” are all around us.  I had many on my fitness journey and still have some that pop up from time to time to comment or judge me.  They used to bother me a ton, but now, I don’t let them get to me at all.  I wrote an article about this a long time ago (on March, 2012) called “Naysayers” (click here to see).  As you can see, this is a very common occurrence for those on a fitness journey.

Be sure to not let the “Haters” get to you.  Don’t let one comment derail your progress.  The good news is that “Haters” only start commenting when they see others accomplishing things they are not willing to do themselves.  They are jealous and  want to make themselves feel better by saying something negative.  Remember, that you are choosing to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.  Unfortunately, it is now the norm to be “lazy”, complain, and give up.   So, when you start getting these types of comments, that means you are making visible progress!  I challenge you to embrace that.

I was motivated to write this article today and make this video because a friend of mine copied me on a Facebook comment that really touched me.  She said:

“Just had a moment yesterday where someone made me feel like I’m being braggy. I’m like…I’m still fat, but putting in the time to change. Having everyone in my life in my corner helps and being accountable to that publicly is a huge motivator. I’m inspired by FB posts by Fred Lee, (and she mentions a few others) who remind me what other people my age are doing and that it is possible!”

First off, I want to say I am very touched when I see that what I do helps inspires others.  Thank you for sharing that.  I made a decision to change my life when I turned 40 (3 years ago) and began to start “pushing play” every day, and now, I choose to live a fit lifestyle and I do my best to inspire others to do the same.  There is no better feeling than helping other people.  My comment to my friend is that you inspire me too!  Know that “it is possible”!  Keep posting your workouts on Facebook and be accountable.  Be proud of your accomplishments and share all of your “wins” both big and small.  You got me and many others “in your corner” so don’t let one comment from a “Hater” derail your progress!

So, how do you handle “Haters”?  My advice is to start putting a “filter” for the negative and turning up the volume on the positive.  I include a short video clip of a speech that Shaun T gave after the “live” T25 group workout at the Coach Summit this year in Vegas.  It was awesome to see his passion and challenge for all of us just to accept ourselves for who we are.  He says, “I challenge you to look in the mirror and say I love YOU for YOU.  Once you do that, you can do anything.”  I totally agree with Shaun T.  Once you start accepting and believing in yourself, you can do anything in this life.  This reminds me of another quote that Tony Horton (the creator of P90x) likes to say.  He says, “I stopped caring about what other people thought about me a LONG time ago.”

Hope you all have a great week, Gang!  Keep pushing play and try to take on this week’s challenge I listed in the video for “Plank Rotations”.  Do your max in 30 seconds and report what you got.  If it is too difficult, then be sure to modify, modify, modify.

Bring it!

-Coach Fred
