I am in Quarterly Competition (Please Vote)

As some of you have seen in my transforamtion video, I won a $1,000 Beachbody Challenge Contest back in October 2011 for having the best transformation in my age group.  Now I am in the running for the quarterly competition.

The first round was up to a panel of judges, now it is up to the general public to decide.  Voting goes until the end of day on Tuesday January 24th.  You can place a vote every 24 hours. Thanks in advance for your support!  Please click here to vote:

Also, below is a copy of what I submitted to Team Beachbody about my transformation.

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?

In April 2010 I turned the big “40”. I remember staring at the mirror and looking at the 275 pound guy staring back at me and thinking “How did I let myself get like this?”

Looking back 20 years, I used to be active and in shape. In fact, I was a college football player and that was when I met my wife. Unfortunately, the pounds piled on as I worked long hours trying climb the corporate ladder.  My rude awakening was on my 33rd birthday. Tipping the scales at 300 pounds, my doctor told me I had to lose the weight now or else it was only a matter of time before serious health issues started.

Over the next few years, I tried jogging, joining gyms, and even saw a nutritionist, but nothing seemed to work.  I just gave up. I felt depressed and hated my body, and hated even more how little energy I had to play with my 3 children.  I knew I was setting a terrible example to my kids.  Worse yet, I feared I may not live long enough to see them grow up.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?

At 40 years old, I decided I needed to make a change. I was tired and burned out and I wanted to turn my life around. That is when I shocked my boss and all my coworkers when I announced I was going to quit my corporate job. They were even more shocked when I told them where I was going. I was leaving to manage my mom and dad’s restaurant business.

The decision to finally quit my job led to a lot more positive changes. That is when I decided to spend more time with my family. That is when I decided my 3rd child would actually see his father. That is when I decided I needed to get healthy so I can be with my family a long time. The only problem was I didn’t know how. Luckily, that is when a friend introduced me to P90x.

Why did you choose the particular program?

I saw the infomercials for P90x on TV many times.  I used to tell myself those programs never work.  Those results cannot be real.  They must be using Photoshop or something.  However, when I saw my friend on Thanksgiving of 2010 and this voice of a fat guy I used to know came out of this really in shape person in front of me, I was shocked and amazed.  I asked him how he got so in shape.  He simply said, “I used P90x.”  The next few days I began to Google it and watch YouTube videos of ordinary people getting amazing results with this program.  That is what inspired me to buy P90x.

What in particular did you like about the program you chose?

For years I tried jogging, treadmills, and weights.  I knew pieces of working out, but I never was able to put it all together.  P90x was the whole package with cardio, resistance and nutrition.  It was the first time I was able to think of fitness as a total package.  I actually had a gym membership while starting P90x. Within a couple weeks of getting into P90x, I stopped going to the gym entirely because I was able to do everything I needed from the comfort of my home.

I also liked how Tony Horton made the program fun and I really appreciated the variety of workouts.  The idea of “muscle confusion” was new to me and I soon realized that P90x was a whole new level of intensity to working out that I had never experienced before.  Following the schedule kept the workouts fresh and writing all my progress down helped motivate me to keep “bringing it”.

Tell us about the greatest challenge you faced. How did you overcome that challenge?

For a 275 pound guy, I knew I bit off more than I could chew by purchasing such an extreme program.  However, I made the decision that this time would be different and I would not quit. Tony Horton really inspired me and I followed his advice to “just show up” and “keep pushing play”.  It felt like he was talking directly to me   I could barely do any pushups when I started.  Plyometrics seemed impossible to get through at first.  But I modified, modified, modified, and the results started to come.  I could barely do any twists in Yoga at first, but halfway through Round 1 it hit me.  My tummy got smaller and smaller, and all of a sudden, I could start doing many of the moves I couldn’t do on the first day.  From that day forward everything started to become easier and I started to look for these little “wins” along the way that showed me making progress and turning my life around.

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. What achievements are you proud of?

My proudest moment was when I was nearing the end of Round 2.  I was at the store trying on a size 38 inch waist pants.  My wife came up to me with tears in her eyes and said she remembered buying me a size 38 inch pair of shorts when we first started dating.  She gave me a big hug and said I look just like the man she met 20 years ago.  I hugged her back, smiled, and said I promised to be in even better shape than that guy she first met!

By end of Round 2, I delivered on my promise and finished off at 198 pounds. I lost a total of 55 pounds in 3 months (down 77 pounds overall from where I started 6 months ago). I was skinnier than my wife had ever seen me and I fit loosely in size 36 size pants (down from a size 46). It is strange to look in the mirror and not have that almost 300 pound guy staring back at me anymore. Words cannot express how it feels to lose all this weight and know that I am now in the best shape of my life and will be here longer for my beautiful family.
