Mid-Week Motivation – “What to do about haters?”

Posted by on Sep 5, 2013

Hey, Team Dragon Fit! Hope that you had a great Labor Day Weekend and that you are continuing to push play and crush your nutrition! This week’s topic is about “Haters” and what to do about them. “Haters” are all around us.  I had many on my fitness journey and still have some that pop up from time to time to comment or judge me.  They used to bother me a ton, but now, I don’t let them get to me at all.  I wrote an article about this a long time ago (on March, 2012) called “Naysayers” (click here to see).  As you can see, this is a very common occurrence for those on a fitness journey. Be sure to not let the “Haters” get to you.  Don’t let one comment derail your progress.  The good news is that “Haters” only start commenting when they see others accomplishing things they are not willing to do themselves.  They are jealous and  want to make themselves feel better by saying something negative.  Remember, that you are choosing to live a healthy and...

Tuesday Talk – Upping Your Carbs

Posted by on Aug 20, 2013

Hi Dragons! Hope you are “bringing it” on your workouts and crushing your nutrition. The video above talks about “upping your carbs”.  Here is a discussion I had last night with one of the members on my team in our online Facebook Support Group. “Upping the carbs is a great idea to shake things up. Awesome that you learned so much how your body reacts while doing the Ultimate Reset. In fact, as long as you are on a calorie deficit, you should lose weight still. The key is that with “GREAT carbs, comes GREAT responsibility”! LOL! Because as you know, carbs are your body’s preferred energy system and also the easiest to turn into fat. If you up your carbs, make sure you also take the responsibility to up your intensity! Those extra carbs should give you an energy boost so take advantage of that and don’t hold back! As I always like to say, “Get your sweat on”! Perhaps your diet can reflect your day. If you are not able to “get your sweat on” during periods of when...

P90x3 Coming This Year!

Posted by on Oct 8, 2013

Hi Gang! Check out the video above.  That’s right!  You heard it right here!  I am SUPER excited to announce that P90x3 is launching by the end of this year.  Beachbody is starting to share some details on this program and here is what I know as of right now: 1.) WHAT IS P90X3? Tony Horton calls P90X3 the ultimate excuse buster.  The original P90X program was a game changer in the fitness industry and introduced “muscle confusion” and “periodization” so average people could get extreme results. For myself, I ended up losing 100 lbs. using this program!  P90X2 was a “graduate program” for veterans of P90X.  It had stability balls and med balls, balance moves, etc. that can be mastered but will take some time.  Tony loves the P90X2 program but found the advanced moves intimidated many people. With P90X3, they condensed and simplified many workouts and packaged it all together in only 30 minutes.  Simply put, the goal is to get the same insane results in a shorter period of time.  Tony says that science is showing that the...

Pre-Workouts (PWOs)

Posted by on Aug 7, 2012

Hi Team Dragon Fit! See my post yesterday on the 5p’s.  For me, I have always said that first thing in the morning is the best time to workout.  In that way, I don’t have any excuses to miss it later in the day and let “life” get in the way.  Also, I always feel a sense of accomplishment after finishing a workout.  What a great way to start your day on a positive note! I won’t lie, it can be hard at times.  Especially, since I have 3 little kids, I might have been up late the night before getting them water or taking them to the bathroom, putting them back to bed after a bad dream, etc.  If your a parent, then you know the drill!  LOL! There were many mornings when I got up to push play with only 3 hours sleep.  It was tough.  Real tough!  Luckily, I learned about Pre-Workouts (PWO’s).  I have been using Beachbody’s Energy & Endurance (E&E).  I started taking this about 4 months ago and I got to...

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS?  IS YOGA AN HOUR AND A HALF AGAIN? The base kit has 16 workouts and the deluxe kit has 20 workouts. Some of the new programs include: Pilates, MMX (based on MMA fighting) CVX Cardio, Agility X, Isometrics, and so on.  The best news for me and many others is that Yoga is now ONLY 30 minutes! LOL!  Like the original P90X, there are several program schedules to choose from: “Classic”, “Lean”, “Doubles”, and a brand new one which interests me a lot because I love the Body Beast program: “Mass”. 3.) NUTRITION: P90x3 has a simplified nutrition plan more in line with eating “healthier” and “choosing” healthier foods.  It is similar to the original Power 90 program that Tony Horton launched in the early days of Beachbody.  Something accessible for everyone.  Still, there will be plenty of information for those of us that like to track...

I was motivated to write this article today and make this video because a friend of mine copied me on a Facebook comment that really touched me.  She said: “Just had a moment yesterday where someone made me feel like I’m being braggy. I’m like…I’m still fat, but putting in the time to change. Having everyone in my life in my corner helps and being accountable to that publicly is a huge motivator. I’m inspired by FB posts by Fred Lee, (and she mentions a few others) who remind me what other people my age are doing and that it is possible!” First off, I want to say I am very touched when I see that what I do helps inspires others.  Thank you for sharing that.  I made a decision to change my life when I turned 40 (3 years ago) and began to start “pushing...

Tuesday Talk – A Towel Can Be The Best Tool

Tuesday Talk – A Towel Can Be The Best Tool

Aug 27, 2013

Hey, Dragons! Here is another weekly video episode of our Tuesday Talks.   The video above highlights the following:   1. CONGRATULATIONS TO SARAH AND STEVE STARTING P90X TOGETHER Steve and Sarah started a round of P90x together yesterday.  The are both committed to “bringing it” over the next 90 days.  So, lookout!!  They are going to get awesome results. 2. NEXT WEEK’S CHALLENGE: CHAIR DIPS Do as many as you can in 60 seconds and report what you got.  Bonus points goes out to those that can do some of them with your leg raised.  Bring it! 3. HOW CAN A TOWEL BE THE BEST WORKOUT TOOL? First off, let me give a shout out to Steve who has been “bringing it” on Team Dragon Fit for a long time.  He has lost a ton of weight and has been “paying it forward” by helping others.  The problem with helping people in a group workout is that there is never enough equipment to go around.  That’s okay. Sagi (the creator of Body Beast) showed us a great way to get an awesome calorie burn by just using a simple towel.  Basically, you need to pair up with someone and one person provides resistance, while the other tries to perform the exercise.  The great part is that both people get a great workout.  The one providing resistance sturggles to hold the towel steady and the one performing the exercise gets a burn.  A simple workout of “push” vs. “pull”.  If the person helping you is not as strong as you, then be sure to increase your number of reps so that you still get a great burn. 4. RESULTS OF LAST WEEK’S CHALLENGE: BURPEE JUMP SQUATS FROM LES MILLS COMBAT I have to admit, these were tough.  These are definitely a lot tougher than they looked in the video clip.  With that said, Debbie on our team rocked this challenge.  She nailed out 16 in one minute and then continued to do the enitre workout and did another 19 later.  Awesome!  Coach Fred only got 14, so the “DRAGON AWARD” goes to you, Debbie, for this week’s challenge!  Nice! Hope you are continuing to...

Tuesday Talk – Upping Your Carbs

Aug 20, 2013

If you are not able to “get your sweat on” during periods of when you are really busy, then on those days you can scale back on the carbs because you know you can’t “bring it”.  What macro and cal targets are you looking at hitting?  50p/30c/20f is a good fat shredder macro target. A good middle road target is 40p/40c/20f or 40c/30p/30f.” I thought this was a really good discussion last night, so I thought I would share with all of you. So, what are your goals?  If you want to lose fat, then a good plan to follow is the “fat shredder diet” that I mention above.  If you are near your goal or starting to lose energy and not see results, then it may be a good time to start upping your carbs.   See my post on “Where Do I start?” for more of my links on nutrition. Just be sure to remember that with “GREAT carbs, comes GREAT responsibility”! Also, I want to give another huge shout out to Sarah and Debbie!  Those two have been really pushing and supporting each other while doing Les Mills Combat.  As a Coach, it really...

Tuesday Talk – Convenience

Tuesday Talk – Convenience

Aug 13, 2013

Hi Team! The above video talks about convenience. Think this week about what you can do to make your life more convenient. The example I give in my video is my car. It is a Honda Odyssey and I LOVE it! When I was younger, I would have never imagined that I would buy a “soccer mom” car. In fact, I hate to admit it, but I remember very clearly teasing my friend Dennis when he got one for his family. He talked about all the features and how he had leather interior, etc. (That is why I joke in the video about how I have leather interior.) I told him that no matter what, it was STILL just a minivan! LOL! Fast forward over a decade and I now have one too! Who would have thought? My prior car was a SUV. It was awesome, and it was my “man” car! If you are a guy, then you definitely know what I mean. However, for hauling three kids and car seats, it was not very practical. In fact, it was pretty darn inconvenient. Now I have a minivan. It may not be as “cool” as my SUV, but it is perfect for my current stage of life. It makes hauling my entire family super convenient. So, look around your life and see how you can make it more convenient. When it comes to health and fitness, “convenience” is SUPER important. If you don’t make it convenient, then you are less likely to get it done. Maybe it has to do with picking up quick healthy snacks and having them ready to go for emergencies. Maybe it is adding Shakeolgy to your diet so you have a great meal replacement that tastes great, fights cravings, and takes seconds to make. Or maybe…. It’s about getting a minivan so you save time so you can have more time to workout. If you do, then be sure to get the leather interior! LOL! Have a great week, Gang! Don’t forget! This week’s challenge is decline push ups! Do as many as you can to failure and report what you got. Bring it! -Coach...

Monday Motivation

Aug 5, 2013

Hi Team Dragon Fit! The video above is a little Monday Motivation for you. Today we left early to take the kids to Lake Tahoe. I knew we would be going early today, so I planned ahead to get my workouts done first thing. That means Body Beast Chest & Tris, plus T25 Total Body Circuit, were banged out first thing in the morning. So, you really CAN have it ALL. It just means you need to plan ahead. The kids had a blast! They swam in a kiddie pool, built sand castles in the sand, and even tried catching some fish with a net in the lake. I love taking time out from my hectic schedule to have some quality time with the family. It reminds me of one of the things I read in the book “Wisdom of our Fathers” by Tim Russert. It is a book my wife gave me for Father’s Day. In it he talks about how some fathers try to show their love by giving their kids expensive gifts. He says the best gift you can give your kids, is the gift of YOUR time. Great words to live by! Try this week to give the ones you love the gift of YOUR time! Here’s to your health! Check out the video above for this week’s challenge. Keep bringing it! – Coach...

Hi Team Dragon Fit, Hope you are all off to a great start of your week!     Please watch the video above.  In this video, I cover the following: 1. Peg’s #5 opened it’s doors today!  That’s right! Our family business is already opening our fifth location!  Learn more at www.eatatpegs.com. 2. I am starting a new hybrid program, which includes exercises from Body Beast, T25, and P90x2. 4. Sarah gave us all a group challenge last week to do as many “low plank obliques” we can do in one minute.  I included the footage of my attempt!   LOL!  This week’s challenge is “reach high and under push ups”.  See the video above for an example.  Do as many as you can in 60 seconds and report to the group what you got. Here’s to your health!  Keep “bringing it”! -Coach...

Monday Motivation – What Are You Reading?

Monday Motivation – What Are You Reading?

Jul 8, 2013

Hey, Dragons! Here is a quick video for your Monday Motivation! WHAT ARE YOU READING? A question I would like to ask you is, “What are you reading?”  I am not talking about what is on your coffee table or on your bookshelf collecting dust.  I am talking about what are you “actively” reading?  If you are on this site, then you are likely already improving yourself with exercise and nutrition.  The area that many of us neglect is personal development.  There are tons of distractions, that if we let them, will consume our entire day.  So, we never feel we have enough time to do what we know is good for us. The key is to say “no” to the distractions and “choose” to read something that will help make you think, challenge you, and develop you personally.  Some people enjoy reading the newspaper and watching the news all day.  For me, I skim those briefly but do not let it consume my day because they are the “sames”.  Meaning you get almost the “same” news everyday.  Just the names and places seem to change.  Also, watching the news these days tends to sensationalize the negative and downplay the positive, which only feeds our daily stress. So, my recommendation is to broaden your horizons!  Pick up something that has great reviews.  Start with only a chapter a day.  You don’t need to consume an entire book in one sitting.  In fact, I have benefited from reading one chapter and let it “bake” in my head for a while before moving on.  I often re-read certain books because I almost always take something “new” from them that I missed the first time. RECOMMENDATIONS ON FURTHER READING: Here is a list of books I recommend: “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People” by Stephen Covery.  A timeless book with great advice on how to prioritize, weekly planning, and enhance your relationships. “First Things First” by Stephen Covey.  This book takes time management discussed in the previous book to the next level. “Eat That Frog” by Brian Tracy.  Great practical advice on time management “Getting Things Done” by David Allen.  This book gives great advice on...

Hey, Dragons! This is Coach Fred checking in.  Hope you are all continuing to push play and crush your  nutrition! For many of you, you may have not heard from me in a while.  A lot has happened for me both personally and professionally. I share some of it in my posts.  I struggled when I let “life” get in the way.  Still, with all that has been going on, I am proud to say that I found the time to push play every day, “bring it” on my nutrition, and help daily to lead the dedicated members who take on our private Facebook Challenge Group. How Much Water Should I Drink?

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Jul 6, 2013

Hey, Dragons! Hope you are all pushing play and crushing your nutrition!  A common question I get asked is “How much water should  I drink?”  This is a great question and one that is addressed very well in the P90x2 nutrition guide. There is a recommendation.  Look at how much you weigh.  Whatever that “#” is, divide that number in half and that is how many ounces of water you should personally drink in a day.  For example, if you weigh “200” lbs., then the number you use is “200”.  Take that number and divide by half and you get that you should drink “100” ounces of water every  day. Simple, right?  Yes  and no.  If  you don’t measure how much you drink then you have no idea how much you put in your body.  I have some cups I use often and I know their size, so it is easy for me to calculate how much I am drinking.   If you don’t keep track, then you are probably not drinking enough. The truth is that many people do a poor job of hydrating throughout the day.  Often if you feel tired, fatigued, or have a headache, you might very well be dehydrated.  The human body is an amazing machine.  You may be one of those people who prides themselves on being a camel and not needing to drink for a long time.  If you do, the body will do its best to adapt, and likely it will not be performing in top condition.  Think of it this way.  Race car drivers need to be very careful about the wheels on their car.  If they don’t take care, they will wear them out too quickly and not be able to continue the race.  If you are taking on an athletic event or working out with a Beachbody program, it is critical you stay hydrated because you will definitely get your  “sweat on” doing any of these programs and wear your body out. From one of my prior posts, you know that I am preparing for a Tough Mudder event.  Hydration will be critical for this event so I am planning and preparing accordingly.  That is why I wake up early and...

Happy 4th of July! Tough Mudder Is Coming

Jul 4, 2013

Hey Dragons! Just wanted to wish everyone out there a Happy 4th of July!  Hope you had a chance to share some quality time with your families.  Personally, I enjoyed taking my family last night to the Reno Aces Baseball Stadium and watched all the fireworks after the game.  The kids had a blast! Some of you on my private group challenge know that I have been in training for my first Tough Mudder.  What is Tough Mudder?  It is a 10 to 12 mile run with challenging obstacles placed throughout the entire event.  It is promoted as “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet”.  Is it tough?  Well, take a look at the following video and let me know what you think. The coolest part is that part of the admission fee goes to the “Wounded Warrior Project”, which helps those injured serving our great nation. I am both nervous and excited for this event.  It takes place on July 14th in Tahoe and that means I have less than 2 weeks to get ready.  I’ll update you all after the event. Wishing you all the very best on this great holiday! -Coach Fred  ...

Motivation Mondays

Motivation Mondays

Jul 1, 2013

Hey, Dragons! Hope you are all doing well on this fine Monday!  It’s a beautiful day today in Reno!  Forecast is 100 degrees so it is going to be a hot one! I often like to ask those on my team, “What are you CHOOSING to do today to make your life awesome!”  For me, today I “chose” to get up at 5:30am so I could run 6 miles starting at 6:30am. Why get up an hour early you may ask?  I live in Reno, Nevada and it is a desert.  It is always important to plan ahead and start the hydration process early, especially since I live in an area that is so dry and hot.  So, I set my alarm early and sneak out of bed and tip toes downstairs so I can start hydrating and getting limber before I go outside for my run.  So, be like me and don’t just “find” time to workout, you need to “make” time! Please check out my video above.  Hopefully, it puts a little motivation in your Monday!  In it, you will find a NEW challenge for the week!  If you are part of my “private” Facebook challenge group, please post your results of the “wall squat” challenge by Sunday to the group. Remember that there are 2 ways to win “bragging rights” this week: 1) who has the longest time, and 2) who has the most “creative” place to do it! Take a photo for fun and share with the team! Keep pushing play and “bringing it” on your nutrition! -Coach Fred      ...

Vegas, Baby! Coach Summit Update

Vegas, Baby! Coach Summit Update

Jun 27, 2013

Vegas, Baby! That’s right! It’s that time of the year! Last week was Beachbody’s biggest annual event: The Coach Summit! It took place from June 20 to 23 in Las Vegas. I went last year and it was a total blast and this year was even better.  Coach Summit is an opportunity for thousands of Beachbody coaches to get together, learn about Beachbody’s newest workouts and supplements, and of course, get our sweat on with all the celebrity trainers like Tony Horton, Shaun T, and Sagi! I am proud to be a part of Beachbody. I am passionate about their programs and supplements because they have changed my life! I was especially excited this year because I talked my wife in to bringing the whole family along. We stayed at the MGM Grand Hotel and I was able to learn all about the exciting new things that Beachbody has in the pipeline during the day, and then celebrate in Vegas with my family in the evenings.  I want to give a special thanks to my wife who watched our three little ones every single day!  It was an awesome time, especially given that I was able to marry two of the most important things in my life: my family and my passion for health and fitness.  It was awesome! As you can see from the video above, I got a few new video toys so thought this would be fun to share a quick video update. I know you are all busy so this is only 1 minute long and includes 3 quick updates: 1) Shaun T’s new workout called Focus T25, 2) new Vanilla Shakeology Flavor, and 3) an update on Coach Fred’s P90x certification. I’ll be sharing more on these and other updates from the Coach Summit in future posts! Here’s to your health! Keep “bringing it”! -Coach...

Where Start? Simple. Just Show Up!

Where Start? Simple. Just Show Up!

May 2, 2013

Hey, Dragons! We got a few new people on the team, including one of my sisters who is trying out Shakeology to see the benefits. Way to start “bringing it”, Sis! I also got a couple named Joey and Mary who just joined this team and have an awesome goal. Their goal is to get in shape for their big wedding day in September! What an awesome goal, and what’s even more awesome? They are doing it together! What a great way to start a life together! So, you may have been on the team a while or you may have just joined. I know it’s tough when you are just starting out. There is sooo much information. It can be overwhelming to learn new things about nutrition and workouts. The good news is that you have already overcome the biggest hurdle! That’s right! If you are reading this post then you have decided that you want to be fit! Trust me that this is the single biggest hurdle to overcome on your fitness journey! Now the next biggest hurdle is that you need to decide if you are going to show up! One of my favorite quotes is by Woody Allen: 80% of success is showing up. “I made the statement years ago which is often quoted that 80 percent of life is showing up. People used to always say to me that they wanted to write a play, they wanted to write a movie, they wanted to write a novel, and the couple of people that did it were 80 percent of the way to having something happen. All the other people struck out without ever getting that pack. They couldn’t do it, that’s why they don’t accomplish a thing, they don’t do the thing, so once you do it, if you actually write your film script, or write your novel, you are more than half way towards something good happening.
